An MP in Peterborough has called for the city council to block the new build of a gambling arcade in the centre of town, after a plan was submit proposing a new adult gaming centre.
Peterborough Proposes New Gambling Arcade
New Horizon Amusements submit a proposal last week which included a planning application for an adult gaming centre in the city centre – however the plan has been met with criticism early on.
A gambling arcade already exists in the Peterborough town centre and the new proposal would involve an expansion into the property next-door, which is also owned by New Horizon Amusements.
Early signs from the proposal suggest that the town would not be happy with the expansion, as both labour and conservative politicians have called for the plans to be blocked by the council.
In a letter to the council following the proposal, Peterborough MP Paul Bristow wrote: “What can we do as a council to stop these horrendous centres that cause harm and deliver no discernible benefit to the people of the city?
“Gambling is a public health issue with potentially devastating consequences. I have spoken with many people about the serious effects of gambling addiction, which, in the worst cases, can even lead to suicide.
“These places are also just not right for our city centre. They encourage quite frankly the wrong reasons for people to travel into the city.” Bristow added.
“We have a duty and responsibility to protect those vulnerable to the risks and do what is right for the city centre. There is also the risk of anti-social behaviour with people on the streets at all hours, and all too often it comes with street drinking and aggressive begging.”
With such negative views on the proposal across the board, Peterborough city council will now have to consider whether or not to move forward with the expansion plan.
