The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), sends a warning to betting operators over Euro 2024 and aims to clamp down on any risk towards minors gambling.
ASA Sends Warning To Betting Operators Over Euro 2024
On June 14th Euro 2024 commences, as the nations across Europe look to clinch one of the two major international trophies available.
Sports betting is expected to see a huge spike over the course of this tournament and the ASA has made its guidelines over targeting minors with advertisement very clear.
The UK Code of Non-broadcast Advertising and Direct & Promotional Marketing (CAP Code) continues to be in effect, which means people under 25 cannot be in any betting operator adverts.
This includes professional football players, but the operators can feature U25’s on their sites that allow for direct bets to be placed.
Additionally, another key feature of ASA’s guidelines is avoiding any player that is popular in the U18 demographic when advertising.
Euro 2024 is not the only major sporting event this summer, as the Olympics will be returning in Paris and annual tournaments like Wimbledon will also be in full flow.
Chief Executive of Betsson, Pontus Lindwall, has highlighted how beneficial the Euros will be for sports betting and operators in general if done in accordance with the ASA.
He said: “We expect a spike across all verticals because the whole activity goes up. We have more customers coming in and, even though it’s sports betting mainly, it spills over to other products.
“I think as well, you can say that our industry ends up in the spotlight during those tournaments. We get some great exposure in the press, which is nice.”
In 2023, the United Kingdom’s gross gaming revenue saw an increase of around 10%, which was largely supported by the online casino bets placed throughout the year.
However, some huge names in the UK betting scene faced a less successful year, with Bet365 confirming an operating profit drop of 88%.
