The Independent Betting Adjudication Service, known as IBAS, has revealed its analysis on the year since the Gambling White Paper opened up in the UK and is now comfortable in stepping into the ombudsman role.
IBAS Analyses Possible Gambling Ombudsman Position
The Gambling White Paper was released on April 27th 2023, which aimed to make huge changes within the UK gambling industry.
A major part of the publication was to appoint an ombudsman at the helm of the industry, after concerns grew over failing to reach this goal.
A spokesperson from IBAS revealed that after analysing the current state of the UK gambling industry, IBAS can now work with the government and others to reach the objective.
They said: “As we reflect on this milestone, IBAS is ready to partner with the government and industry stakeholders to achieve this vital goal.
“We are ready to step into the ombudsman role with a robust consumer-focused plan, pending the support of key stakeholders and agreement of an appropriate funding model.
“The push for an ombudsman signals a shared dedication to safeguarding consumers, addressing social responsibility and gambling harm concerns.
“With decades of experience as a trusted independent adjudicator in the gambling sector, IBAS is uniquely positioned to lend its expertise to establish a robust and independent body.”
IBAS works as a specific role in the gambling industry, acting as an Alternative Dispute Resolution service, which has been allowed by the Gambling Commission.
It comes into effect when there are legal issues or disputes that total to a maximum of £10,000 and has solved over 90,000 disputes since opening in 1998 – accumulating £7.5 million in customer returns.
The spokesperson from IBAS continued and revealed that the company are looking to stay independent, while helping customers get the necessary support.
Finally, IBAS concluded: “We acknowledge the various viewpoints on the ombudsman creation and recognise the importance of incorporating feedback for its effectiveness.
“However, individuals with disputes against gambling operators must have access to fair and impartial dispute resolution – a need currently unmet.
“The IBAS Board, free from gambling operator influence, is dedicated to maintaining its independence while working collaboratively to establish a respected gambling ombudsman, ensuring that gambling consumers receive the support they deserve without undue delay.”
